Hemoglobin is found in red blood cells and is responsible forcarrying oxygen throughoutthe body. In diabetes mellitus, sugar builds up inthe blood and combines with hemoglobin, becoming "glycated." Hemoglobin A1c (or HbA1c)levels are measured to determine the average amount of sugar in your blood. Higher levels of HbA1c in the range of 6.5%indicate diabetes, with risk developing at greater than 4% HbA1c. Point of care kits use Boronate affinity chromatography and immunoasays to detect HbA1c, but ELISA and HPLC are also commonly used diagnostic tests for HbA1c.
